"Blessed Is the Jaguar" Original Painting & Shamanic Session

The Jaguar is a powerful animal with ancient spiritual significance. It encompasses both the powers of life and death, and the ability to travel between or bridge worlds. 

Jaguars also have a powerful association with shamanic power. There are many stories of were-jaguars, and shamans able to shape-shift into jaguar form. In Aztrec mythology this animal is also connected with Tláloc, the god of rain and agriculture, and so symbolizes vital life force energy. 

The title of this painting was downloaded as I was painting it and refers to Saying 7 of Yeshua in the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas: 

"Blessed is the lion which the man eats, and the lion will become man; and cursed is the man whom the lion eats, and the lion will become man." 

To me, this saying serves as both warning and instruction. The lion (or in the case of this painting, the jaguar) symbolizes the bestiality of man.

As embodied beings, we each have within ourselves an inner wild animal which we must both assimilate and transcend. Done successfully, (the man consuming the lion), we are able to partake of the life force of the animal which gives us vital energy towards fulfilling our purpose on earth. On the other hand if we allow our bestial nature to take over, we become mere brutes in human form (the lion consuming the man) - a phenomenon which was played out in Aztec times through the horrific sacrifice of children to the jaguar god in an effort to guarantee rain and successful harvest.

In this painting, Jaguar spirit appears in a transcendent capacity, reminding us that in developing our consciousness and calling on our higher natures we can harness the power and vitality of the animal self and use it to fuel our higher purpose.  When we do, we unleash an alchemical impulse capable of redeeming human suffering and bringing greater Light into the world.
